Restoration and Preservation

Digital image

Old photographs, film slides and negatives produced from old cameras, hold a wealth of business and social history.

Over many years, PRAPS has converted countless negatives, slides and old photographs into digital format.

What was once personal memories are now recycled and repurposed to produce top quality ready to use digital images.

These images can also be used to print off and use as decoration pieces or form part of any print-on-demand items such as greeting cards, mouse mats, mugs - the list is endless.

Our own range of images include commercial and residential landscapes, transportation, architecture, property, nature, wildlife and people at work and play - below is a very small sample of images we can offer.

You tell us what you need and we will do the research to select the best match possible,

Restoration and Preservation - The Process

 Introduction

Old photographs, film slides and negatives can hold precious memories and be of historical importance. Unfortunately, over time photographs can become damaged, faded, torn or creased.

Similarly, film negatives and slides can be scratched or damaged from poor storage particularly by moisture and temperature.

In the case of film negatives and slides you may no longer have suitable equipment to show the images.
However, there is a solution - convert and restore!

Conversion

Before any restoration can take place, all old media needs to be converted into a digital format  by means of scanning.

Digitisation is the process of converting slides, negatives and photographs into images which can then be stored on compters, tablets and smartphones.

Depending on the type and size of the original items, conversion is carried out by using a scanner or by using a digital camera.

The photographs, slides and negatives remain in their original condition apart from a quick dust before scanning takes place.

Editing

Once an image has been digitised, it can then be edited to enhance the appearance.

When people talk about images you may hear terms such as ‘retouching’ and ‘airbrushing’.
All of these terms are related to image manipulation or editing as we prefer to call the process. Image editing can include cropping, exposure correction, colour correction, tone correction, blemish removal, change of brightness, change of contrast, removal of elements from the background, adding elements that initially were not in the picture, improving the overall style and look of the image e.g. changing the colour scheme.
Bear in mind that editing does not just apply to old negatives, slides and photographs - the same processes can be applied to any digital images on mobiles, laptops, PCs or tablets which may need some form of editing.
